The Juilliard School | University of Manitoba

Hey! My name’s Ben and I graduated last year from the Juilliard School. I’m a composer, and got my Masters degree in music there, but also worked closely with the dance and drama departments, producing music for new dances and plays. Juilliard is a fascinating place, with a lot ...going on behind the scenes, so if you want the inside scoop, help deciding if it’s a fit for you, info on the financial side of things, or audition advice let me know. It’s the best school in the world for some people, and a terrible fit for others, so it’s definitely worth considering. My background is in coming from Canada, where I studied film, philosophy, and piano performance at the University of Manitoba. As a pianist, organist, cellist, and baritone, I’ve performed across Canada and New York in solo and chamber settings, as well as with the National Youth Choir and Orchestra of Canada, Polycoro, Camerata Nova, and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. I’m the founder and director of SOUNDYARD Composer's Circle, a Schoenberg-inspired new music society. In addition to concert music, I’ve composed the scores for short films, and two features: Headspace (2018), and The Captives (2016). When not composing or performing, I work as a wildfire fighter in Northern Manitoba, and spend part of my summer teaching sailing in north Ontario. Currently I’m conducting the Messiah for a production in New York, and directing my second short film. I like the colour orange, olive oil, wool, Rachmaninoff's All-Night Vigil, lakes, prairie storms, El Greco, and podcasts. Show more
